2012 Notices

17 September 2012

Hello All,

Two quick items.

First, Helen Quinby has the club’s Sunfish up and running! The boats look great and are ready to be checked out by YRYC members. Call Helen if you would like to use one at 804-832-5730. I’ll also be adding a web page about them soon. Thanks Helen!

Second, The results from the York River Cup. The event itself was fantastic – Thank you Dan Fox and Mike Mastracci! The party after was even better with so many people it filled the club room, the activities room, and the pool area! Thank you Kathy Bowen for hosting the event this year!

The write up I sent out to SBRNYCU is below…

The 2012 York River Cup – sanctioned race #424 hosted by the York River Yacht Club – was contested on the mouth of the York River in strongly variable winds and under clear blue skies Saturday September 15’th. The winner of the PHRF spinnaker fleet and overall winner of the 2012 York River Cup was “Movin’ On” and captain Mike Austin with a perfect 1-1 finish. In second place was “Bitten” and captain Michael Gravitt. Third place in the spinnaker fleet went to “Hornet” and captain Brian Gregory. In the PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleet, the first place trophy went to “Dream On” and captain Steve Bowen who also posted a perfect 1-1 finish, second place went to “Gail Force” and captain Chuck Eldred, and third place went to “H33” and captain Barry Campbell. The event was a huge success and the beyond capacity crowd and party that covered the entirety of the yacht club and pool area went well into the night thanks to the hosting skills of party organizer Kathy Bowen.

See you all soon,

13 August

Hello YRYC Members and friends of the YRYC,

Joran Gendell, our Cruise Captain, asked me to send you all this…

The club’s annual Labor Day Cruise is fast approaching and the marinas are already nearly full. We will cross the bay to Cape Charles on Saturday, September 1, and return home on Monday, September 3. This year, many of us have elected to stay at the Cape Charles Town Docks. Others are staying at Bay Creek per past practice. Only a very few spaces are left. (If anyone finds that they are forced to cancel a reservation, let other club members know first!).

  • For the sailors who are interested, we will do a pursuit race on the way over on Saturday. A pursuit race has staggered starts based on each boat’s rating, and the first boat to finish wins.
  • Saturday night I propose that we join together for a pot luck dinner. The when and the where will depend on how many boats we have at each marina.
  • Lin and I will bring our bocce and croquet sets for Saturday. Golfers may want to play the Bay Creek course.
  • Dinner on Sunday night could be at the new restaurant at the edge of the town docks. I have been told it is very good!

Please let me know who is going and to which marina. I will forward the list to all attending.

We always have a great time on the Labor Day Cruise!

We start October with the Turkey Shoot Cruise. Those of us who have the time will leave Sunday, September 30th, and after several stops (who knows where!) we will plan on getting to Yankee Point Marina on Wednesday Oct 3rd.. From there, some of us are planning on driving up to the Annapolis boat show on Thursday. Hopefully even more club members will join us at Yankee Point on Friday to get the weekend rolling. The regatta supports the Hospice Society. See their site at www.turkeyshootregatta.com. While the racing is open only to boats that were designed no less than 25 years ago, the partying is open to all. Plenty of anchoring room and a free water taxi runs all weekend. Over 100 classic boats out sailing together is a sight to behold! The racing is very simple and casual. Evenings are filled with great food and drink under the tent at the marina. Most of us will travel home Monday. Again, let me know who plans on attending and I will refine the plan and keep everyone advised.

And for our last scheduled fall cruise, we leave Sunday, October 14, to cruise down the InterCoastal Waterway to Beaufort, NC. Some of us will return offshore, while others will motor back up the ICW. Plan on about 10 days. The schedule is loose, as it should be on any vacation! Who’s up for it?

The Fall is one of the most beautiful times to be out cruising on the Bay. We look forward to seeing everyone out there!
