Delphinus 2014-2015 South Trip
In the Captain’s own words: The trip was fantastic. We left on October 25’th and returned on March 8’th. During that time we spent time in Coinjock, NC; Oriental, NC; Beaufort, NC; Beaufort; SC; Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; St. Simons Island, GA; and St. Augustine, FL. Most of the Fall and Spring were spent in Charleston, SC and the depths of Winter were spent in St. Augustine, FL both in town and at the beach. From a cruising perspective we did the whole thing on the ICW. It was fun being part of the waterway culture for four and a half months. Meeting lots of new people and occasionally running into old friends. For example we would see boats and people from Hampton or Seaford here and there. We even ran into Mark and Nancy Hinman from Seaford, YC at a bar in Charleston ( Mark is one of our area PHRF reps ). Having sailed various parts of the ICW before it was interesting to see all the changes that have taken place over the last 10 years. Lots of old bascule and swing bridges replaced by 65’ fixed bridges. I know that some in the club will be unhappy to hear that even the legendary pontoon bridge has been replaced by a high rise fixed bridge. All in all though, cruising the waterway is pretty much as it has always been — the scenery changes a bit but it is still a very people driven experience. When traveling, we split our time between anchoring out and staying at marinas. When not at a marina, there are still lots of amazingly beautiful spots to anchor. If we were at a marina for a month or so ( Charleston and St. Augustine ) we used the boat as a floating condo. We plugged into power, water, and then turned on the Air conditioner / Heat pump and set it to 65 degrees. Very easy and very comfortable and worked well even on the coldest of days. One huge help on the trip was installing a powered WiFi booster antenna for accessing the internet when we were at marinas. This is something that I’ve heard Joran talk about at the cruising seminar and it turned out to be a huge help. A great trip and I’m a little sad that it is over. Good to be back in Virginia though.
