To kick off the 2009 boating season, a two-day festival sponsored by the York River Yacht Club and Crown Pointe Marina will feature music and entertainment by Bob Zentz, a burning of the socks event, a blessing of the fleet, a Friday night cookout, decorated boat contest with cash prizes, radio controlled boat competition, and more. The Down the Bay Race is back after a 10 year hiatus. On May 22, Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, the starting gun will send boats off on a 120 nautical mile, non-stop race down the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis, Maryland, to Hampton, Virginia. This race will mark the 60th running of the event and the first since 1999. Press release attached.

The Rappahannock River was the place to be for racing this October, a feeling that was shared by sailors on about 130 boats who arrived en mass for the Turkey Shoot Regatta. Some, like Helen Quimby’s Avalon II, were still on the hard minus a mast when that feeling took hold, so you can imagine the mad dash to get everything back on board, barrier coat and paint the bottom and back in the water just 2 days before she sailed north. Avalon II rendezvoued with Zatarra on Friday, who provided the crew of Ray and Trica Savoie and Jack and Judi Barnett for the race.

The YRC suffered through the hottest day of the year so far. The heat was relentless with barely a whisper of wind. The non-spin and spinnaker fleets got off just after 1 pm in a couple of knots of fickle wind but it was a hard slog to the windward mark and even harder running back against the current. Luckily a sea breeze filled in with a hundred and eighty degree wind shift, so those beating back up the course suddenly had to get their spinnakers back on deck and those still on a run found themselves again beating to windward.
