YRYC holds ‘Blessing of the Fleet’ ceremony

Members of the York River Yacht Club in Gloucester Point held a Blessing of the Fleet ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
Reverend Dick Sisson blessed the boats, which is meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. Afterwards, members and guests enjoyed a picnic lunch and then held a traditional ‘sock burning ceremony’ in preparation for warmer weather on the sea.
The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition originating in southern European fishing communities. A blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. Many communities across the US and in Europe continue to observe this lovely tradition at the beginning of each boating season.
